I discovered recently that that Tarja Turunen's solo album has actually come out. It's called "My Winter Storm." The music falls into the same genre of "Symphonic Metal", combining elements of classical music and metal, so it is similar to what she has previously done with Nightwish as opposed to a completely radical break. My favorite song in the album is "poison." It features two extra versions of the song, "I walk alone." Her website is, surprisingly enough, tarjaturunen.com . There is also an official myspace http://www.myspace.com/tarjaturunen for you to add so you can pretend that you are close friends with a famous person.

Interesting! I've kinda been meaning to check out some symphonic metal - what's a good band to start with? For reference, I tend to like stuff like Malice Mizer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malice_Mizer) and Moi Dix Mois (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moi_dix_mois), neither of which are symphonic metal per se, but they're still close enough to pique my interest in the genre.

Nightwish and Within Temptation are my favorites, even Nightwish post-Tarja is pretty good. Lacuna Coil tends to be lumped together with them, and The Gathering is supposed to be similar but I haven't heard them yet. In fact there's a whole heap of bands that fall into this category but I haven't got around to listening to them yet. Leaves' Eyes is another one I've had recommended to me.

Hm Hm, anyway, I am currently listening to the complete recordings of Robert Johnson. Extremely good stuff and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to hear some quality delta blues.

Haha, Moi Dix Mois *doesn't judge*

If you haven't already been addicted by X Japan's old-school melodic metal/ballads, I'd suggest giving them a shot. There is a good reason that they're mainstream ;)

Otherwise there are some popular JRock bands like Vidoll, Kagerou and D that are similiar to later Malice Mizer work. Or you could check out some of Gackts solo stuff and/or work with S.K.I.N.

Taia are a female fronted metal band... If that means anything.

In truth, I only like Moi dix Mois' latest album - the earlier stuff is pretty awful. But thanks for the recommendations! I've already heard (and enjoyed) X-Japan, but the others are new to me, so I'll definitely check 'em out.

(Oh, but shame on you for recommending Gackt's solo work. With the sole exception of Mizerable, pretty much everything Gackt has done since leaving MM has been atrocious. Well, the stuff that I've heard, anyway.)

How can you only like Moi Dix Mois new album.. all there music is the same.. good; but its the same operatic organ with metal, plus Juka was the only decent singer. Mana can't move on- he needs a new project.

Dethkloks album is also good.. blacker than the blackest black some say.

I love Malice Mizer, too, but Moi Dix Mois tends to bore the heck out of me - the drums are just too monotonous for my liking. I have yet to give Dixanadu a really decent listen, though.

I haven't really invested much time with this lot, either, but... seconded. Mizerable was great, Moon not too bad, but everything else has been pretty... vanilla (inb4 "I see what you did there").

Just out of curiosity, Stiz: favourite MM era? Though I think Gackt did a great job with the bulk of their discography, I tend to prefer the operatic feel that Klaha's voice imbued the band with in the last couple of years. And Tetsu sounded genuinely unhinged and it's a damn shame he never recorded more than one album with them.

It really depends on the album, I think. I'm quite fond of Beyond the Gate and Nocturnal Opera, am so-so about Dixanadu, and loathe Dix Infernal. But even at their best, they still aren't a patch on MM.

Gackt - no question about it. Voyage isn't especially awesome, but Merveilles is a goodamn masterpiece. I mean, I like Bara no Seidou and Memoire, but compared to Merveilles, the former's a little bit pretentious, and the latter's a little bit primitive. Plus, the fact is that Gackt was simply more talented than Klaha or Tetsu. Have you seen the piece he does with Kami on the l'espace DVD? That shit is rad.

That was actually the last album of theirs I listened to in full, so it could explain why I'm so dismissive of them. I must admit that I have based my opinions of them thus far on the age old technique of "slapping the entire discography on random and hoping something will jump out at me". I really do have to stop doing that with my music collection.

Plus, the fact is that Gackt was simply more talented than Klaha or Tetsu. Have you seen the piece he does with Kami on the l'espace DVD? That shit is rad.

Give Beyond the Gate a listen. It's pretty cheesy and predictable in that Mana-ish way, but still quite good in places. In particular, Deus ex Machina, Perish, and Vain are all very decent.

Yes, why don't you own that DVD? It's really, really great - well worth the cost of the import.

I thought about adding YouTube functionality to the forums - and even installed the necessary bbCode mod - but I dunno ... do we really need it? Clicking on a link isn't a big hassle, and embedded video just seems like the sort of thing that would probably end up being abused. In any case, we'll be changing over to vBulletin soon, so I guess we'll look at it then.

I've just spent the morning with The Grammar Club's first album, Bremelanotide (http://thegrammarclub.com/?page_id=22) and it certainly got me hard. I love bit pop and nerdcore in general, plus I'm a massive fan of Shael Riley's Toybox (http://shaelriley.com/toybox/), so I can't understand why it took me so long to download it after it was released, and even longer to actually spend some time with it. After a couple of spins I've decided that whilst "My Gay Shirt" and "Post Collegiate Shuffle" are highlights, the reason that I initially got so pumped for it, "Bank Holiday", is probably the best of the bunch. Too much fun!

Yes, why don't you own that DVD? It's really, really great - well worth the cost of the import.
Jesus! (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-9y-77-1-49-en-15-Malice+Mizer-70-sc5-40-artist.html) Despite the awesomeness of MM and a pocketful of Christmas monies, paying that much for 4 discs would make me feel very, very dirty indeed. Pity the only editions on Ebay (a) run for a quarter of the price; and (b) are on Ebay.

Dan
12-27-2007, 10:41 AM
That's the collector's edition boxset thingy - most of which, I'm pretty sure, you already own. What you want is this (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=COBA-4162).

I just jumped at that because I was thinking of ordering stuffs from P-A anyway, and they don't have the vanilla edition of l'espace any more. Plus the little music box thingamy sounded kinda neat :p

Haven't ordered from CDJ before; are they any good?

Picked up Radiohead's new album today. It has entered my in-car new-album testing system. Basically, I put it in my car's cd player and it plays for a couple of weeks a bit at a time while I drive around. Then I take it out and play the whole thing in the stereo in the house. This is when I will decide that I actually like it. I'm assuming I will because I've wound up liking everything else Radiohead have put out via this method.

OK, the Kevin Drew album (http://www.amazon.com/Broken-Social-Scene-Presents-Spirit/dp/B000UZ4E20/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1200586361&sr=8-1) is kind of polarizing. The voice is occasionally completely irritating (like on Gang Bang Suicide), and occasionally completely amazing (Backed Out On The...).

Lots less instrumentation than normal Broken Social Scene fare, but what there is is a lot louder, especially since J. fuckin' Mascis is doing a lot of the guitar work.

It's catchy work, and even as "light" as the tracks are, there's still lots of subtleties to the music. It's gonna take me a month to digest this, but like BSS's earlier albums, it will be totally rewarding.

I love The Protomen.Indeed, they're beyond fantastic and their next effort can’t come soon enough - I’ve literally never looked forward to an album so much. The debut really blew me away with the sheer melodrama of its narrative: I couldn’t fathom why a group of people would actually attempt to infuse Megaman’s story with any semblance of meaning, much less how they could succeed by wrapping it in a post-apocalyptic rock opera. Regardless, with the possible exception of the second outing’s kickin’ soundtrack, I can honestly say I’ve never had this much fun with the franchise.

I was planning on writing a stern note to Patrick, asking him to explain why he hadn’t included The Protomen in The Trousers yet, but he’s been on an 8-bit kick as of late so I’ve been pretty happy. Given my love of both chiptunes and The Protomen, I really thought Make-up and Vanity Set’s 8-bit remix album was going to be heavenly, but it was… underwhelming. After listening to artists like USK and Virt, it just sounded kind of pedestrian, which was even more unexpected given how manic a few of M-U&VS’s sample-heavy tracks are.

Talking about piracy is perfectly fine, just so long as you don't provide specific instructions or information. That said, everybody should buy Ghosts anyway, because it's only five bucks, it's mostly excellent, and its success will encourage other established artists to do the same as Trent.

I am listening to Heroic Cthullu, recordings of a RPG about police work (and supernatural stuff, sometimes.) It's great for listening to on the way to school, unfortunately they play it more that I listen, which is about 7-8 hours a week.

Some memorable quotes I just heard. "We're the KBC (Kinley Brothers Company, a private detective agency) who the hell are you!?" He is then called to make an intimidation roll, which he fails. Random person-"Why should I tell you? You're just some guy from KFC!"

Also-"Never bring a gun to a knife fight."

At the moment I'm listening to a lot of MGMT (http://www.myspace.com/mgmt). They do sort of crunchy sounding psychedelic rock. Think 60's hippy tree fuckery channeled through warm analog synths and you sort of get the picture.

I'm ashamed to admit it but I'm also listening to a bit of Hadouken (http://www.myspace.com/hadoukenuk). They're nowhere near as good as the suffocating hype the british press (namely NME) have given them but they're a good laugh.

They're a lot like Mindless Self Indulgence in that they mish mash a lot genre's that shouldn't fit together (namely rock, rave, rap and grime) in a crass, all most obnoxious kind of way. If you're looking for a subtle blending of different musical aesthetics then steer clear. But if you enjoy your music a little sloppy and jaggedy then they be up your alley.

Come to think of it I sometimes listen to the jick show, a podcast (although jick hates that word) by the guys who run KoL (kingdom of loathing). They get up to some wild antics. Jick from KoL and Logan from Heroic Cthullu sound almost exactly the same, it is a sort of voice I can just listen to.

I don't listen to music. Listening to music, lest it should accompany some other form of constructive activity, is essentially chewing gum for the mind. I forget who said that, but the point is that it wears out your brain without producing anything; that is especially true of today's commercial music. I rather like the fact that the music business is growing ever less profitable: soon, only those with an actual appreciation for the art will remain. I will admit to enjoying the occasional movie or game soundtrack, but that comes largely from the fact that it accompanies a more engaging activity.

Since when is music science? Except perhaps when it is mathematics... The only "science" on the subject I've heard is related to those blasted Mozart tapes babies were subjected to, which were supposed to make them smarter, that instead turned out to cause lower test scores than the control group. In any case, this is just my personal experience: all the people I know who listen to music regularly seem far less... mentally apt. They waste spectacular amounts of time just sitting perfectly still, listening. I will admit to enjoying the occasional orchestral or symphonic music track while I read or draw or somesuch, but I have never in my life sat listening to music and doing nothing else. Heck, even if I'm a passenger in a car I find some way to entertain myself, be it reading or even mathematically calculating the price differences in gas stations we pass, should it come to that.

Perhaps my wording was a bit off, it doesn't "wear out" the brain so much as occupy it. Also, when I said "persons with an appreciation for the artform" I was referring to artists themselves; many of what people today call musicians aren't artists, merely factory workers manufacturing melodies.

EDIT: Also, I find your tone counter-productive. Go any further and I may be forced to resort to... Vulgarity.

Science has proven, as far as anything can be proven (gravity, electricity, cake) that the human mind get positively excited and naturally clings onto musical beats. I can't link to any studies, but I assure you, it's as peer reviewed as I say it is.

We certainly have a primal and Oedipal link to beats and rhythms, that's not in need of verification. However, the argument that music is not, "constructive", is a problem in itself, both with regards to the therapeutic psychological benefits of music and the assumption that music is in anyway less constructive a pastime than, by reasonable's examples; films or games. By which I mean I could make the same argument of films or games.

Also, I'd appreciate a response to this:
So, if you were not above listening to music, what would you listen to?
I'd be more willing to consider your opinion if I had some insight into your experience with genres and artists.

Reasonableman

I will admit to enjoying the occasional orchestral or symphonic music track while I read or draw or somesuch,

That is about as close as I can get to a direct response to your query.
And while I had stated that I don't care, your response is reasonable enough to deserve its own response. Thus:

Your argument that music is therapeutic is somewhat dismaying to me. I have no way of telling you that it is not, and no way of confirming that it is, due to the nature of the human psyche, in that it is impossible to measure the psychological effect of some specific thing due to the differences inherent to each individual mind. I could say that music can be equally destructive in that your average "gangster" rap and all the other rock-and-roll hip-hop and whatnot could be corruptive, deliberately undermining not only moral ideals and concepts but the very happiness of the people who listen to it (whiny emo kids, to name but a small portion of those 'afflicted.') HOWEVER, doing so would prompt you to point out the baselessness of my claims, in that it is perfectly feasable that these traits (whiny emoness, moral corruption) are inherent to the mind of the listener and are in fact the reason that they listen to such music. I will admit that it is possible that music could have therapeutic value, but to be honest, I can think of nothing more depressing than some poor old woman lying in bed, listening to an endlessly repeating set of songs from the 80's while bereft of all human contact. Ok, that was kind of a low blow that had little to do with the topic, but that's just what popped into my head when I thought of music as medicine.

Now, insofar as the constructiveness of films and games are concerned, I have but a few points of differentiation to highlight. First, films: I did not mention movies inasmuch as a more engaging means of entertainment: the vast majority of those are also mindless drivel. I believe you misinterpreted my saying that I enjoy listening to movie soundtracks on occasion (seeing as most are orchestral or symphonic these days.) And for games: While a game may not be constructive in the physical sense, IE, there is no 'product' to show for all your careful attention, I have found that there are many games to be played that are intellectually stimulating. Even at the very lowest level of sophistication, the good ol' scrolling shoot em' up, there is some redeeming value: they serve to hone one's reflexes, at least.

The point I am trying to make, should I have failed so far, is that (listening to) music is by and large a passive activity, which most people use as an excuse to stop thinking and sit, motionless, absorbing without contemplating.

etnlIcarus

by and large a passive activity, which most people use as an excuse to stop thinking and sit, motionless, absorbing without contemplating. See, this isn't necessarily true. You're right when you say that different people respond differently and indeed, there are many kinds of music, which illicit different responses within a single individual. Obviously 'gangsta rap' is a source of distress for, lets say, your grandmother but for someone who identifies with the anger; the mistrust and the struggle to deal with the harsher realities of life, the music can provide a source of solidarity; of identity and can act as an outlet for those emotions. Of course the majority of rap album sales actually go to reasonably privileged poser white kids but show me a teenager who doesn't have tragic taste in music and I'll show you an adult.

I'm in a similar boat as yourself, in that I'm a pretty distant and dispassionate person. I find lyrics - especially in popular music - insincere and exploitive of their audience. They're also exceedingly redundant. Although I have found a few songs over the years which provide an insight and emotional summary I can appreciate, my tastes tend to err on the side of compositions; original melodies and more baser rhythms, where a pure appreciation of the aesthetics illicit vivid imagery and actually gives me some access to my long neglected imagination. When it comes to stronger rhythms, I tend to stick to lower tempo stuff, which creates a cycle of suspense and release more conducive to relaxing and letting go of my concerns and neuroses.

I generally don't like arguments which centre around a medium's utility or constructiveness, anyway. Much like sex, although music can serve a finite goal, it needn't and generally doesn't. It is a cultural expression of our very nature and indulgent to it's core, which is only of concern when it interferes with life's other, broader enjoyments.

As much as I hate people who are like "omg musix iz mai lyf" (pretty much every student in my school, everyone on myspace, etc, etc), there's nothing wrong with it. It's not productive you say. So? It's enjoyable and enriches peoples lives, I can't think of a better reason for doing anything.

Soundgarden was the shit.

Posted waay back, but i have been AWOL for a bit.

Yes, I concur. Anyone who could write something as sonically insane as "Jesus Christ Pose" gets my vote.

Also, listening to lots of Iron Maiden after seeing one of the most ridiculously massive gigs ever at Twickenham Stadium yesterday. All old material from the best albums, in a frighteningly big rugby stadium, and good weather to boot (which is a fucking rarity in this rain-drenched grey arse-end of a country).

But bands like that make me feel young, alive and very much not giving a flying fuck what people think.

It's a nice feeling, must get it more often.

Well, let me say this: Hendrix is the SECOND greatest guitar player in the world.

He would be the greatest, except for some gypsy named Django. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Django_Reinhardt)
What about Lonnie Johnson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lonnie_Johnson)? He was just as good, if not better. Although I'm pretty sure he had all of his fingers on him...
(Yeah, the post was from a while ago, but SCREW YOU AND YOUR INTERNET FOLKWAYS. CRUISE CONTROL, DISENGAGE.)

I've been listening to Beck's new album, Modern Guilt, lately. It's pretty good, but not exactly deserving of the "rave reviews" it's been getting. I like it.

Ah ah ah, as a fishy nado i object about the Hail To The Thief part, it has some brilliants songs (I Will, 2+2=5, Go To Sleep, Wolf At The Door etc.) and it nicely bookends radiohead's sound over their last few albums. Amnesiac and Kid A are marvellous though, 'Everything In Its Right Place' is a perfect morning song.

Does anyone else like...Joanna Newsom?

Farvana

I'm busy educating myself about Tom Waits. In particular, how he can go from completely incredible to absolutely corny and back 8 times on the same album.

I'm glad you like Tom Waits, i picked up Asylum Years for a few quid the other day and it's been stuck in my CD player ever since. I do agree with that sentiment, and it's especially the case with his earlier stuff, the Island albums are a definite improvement. Closing time has an awful lot of corn.

Joanna Newsom is interesting on many different levels; She's a harpist, she has indie credentials, Her songs are narrative driven, they rarely end before the 5 minute mark.

The downside is that her voice can be incredibly irritating until you get used to it.

She comes heartily recommended though, give her album Ys a listen
