Band - The Living End
Song changes depending on what I'm listening to. I'm pretty indecisive at the best of times so choosing one song is impossible for me.

Hold on, hold on, hold on.
We try to avoid this kind of thread here. This kind of thread is boring. Who cares what your favourite song is, if you don't have anything to say about it.
From this point onwards, say what your favourite song is, by all means, but please also say why you love it so much. Say something, anyway. JEEPERS GUYS.

I am both frightened and aroused by your colored text, Patrick.
I guess I'll contribute. There's no possible way to tell what my favorite song or band is, even though I tend to listen to the same handful of artists predominantly. If I had to pick one song though, today I pick Aenima by Tool. As far as hard rock goes, it is musically amazing and reflects roughly my own feelings about LA, the majority of Southern California, and really a great deal of American society as a whole. It's also a song that 99.9% of bands out there couldn't cover in their wildest dreams, which makes me feel snooty when I listen to it.

Awww... Okay. I used to like The Black Eyed Peas. Like, a lot. I have come to my senses now and my musical preferences include 80's Metal, ambient kinda background tunes and decent videogames soundtracks: which seem to vary a bit so I'll narrow that down to the ones that don't use liscensed songs (unless it's Vice City's V-Rock) but have a more upbeat feel and non-repetitive feel to them (I honestly can't think of an example, but you catch my drift).
Chiptunes, not so much, though I took Patches advice and downloaded Heartcode... (Then made up my mind about chip-tunes... Ikea shopper credits was good, while the others grated fairly heavily)
While my musical preferences vary, I think the broader your interests, the further you'll go in anything.
Oh, and FTR; Rap music is shit.

Sorry patch, right-o, i shall rectify by example.
Unearth is the band that got me into metal properly, its the exact style that i like, hence my favorite song is made by a somewhat similar band, Soilwork.
this music is meaty and usually fast paced, if you are into metal, give them a go, you won't be disappointed.

Well I don't know if I could ever narrow down my favourite tracks to a single digit number but three tracks that would definately be in my top 50 are...
1. Idle Jack & The Big Sleep (http://www.myspace.com/idlejackandthebigsleep) - Luck Pusher.
The Blurb: An unsigned progressive rock band from York. I think this band were the first to show me that you don't need a big budget to produce a big sound. My first encounter with them was completely accidental. I had gone to the barfly (a local rock music venue) on a random whim and they just happened to be playing there.
There's so many songs of theirs I love but I think If I had to save one from the coming apocalypse it would be Luck Pusher. I heard it first as an acoustic banjo song released through the lead singers myspace and even then, in its most basic incarnation, it had this incredible almost magical energy.
The Gist: Think King Crimson meets Neurosis with a side order of folk and Alice In Chains. Oh, and they use lots of weird instruments - banjo, theramin, xylophone, etc...trust me it all just works.
2. The Doors - The End
The Blurb: Now I could do an entirely seperate top 10 just for this band. Choosing a favourite Doors song is pretty much impossible for me to do. I change my mind like every ten minutes. But if there was one Doors song I think that everybody should hear at least once I think it would be The End.
The Gist: This song for me is pretty much the benchmark for how you do an intense, harrowing vocal performance. Proof, if proof was needed that not everything to emerge from the 60's was lovely dovey.
3. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
The Blurb: A loving tribute to their former singer Syd Barret, this song manages to exceed that context and become emblematic of all those deep emotions we feel when we've lost someone close to us. The only song on this list that has actually brought me to tears.
The Gist: Acoustic guitars backed up by sombre vocals and analog synths. Some of the best lyrics I've ever heard as well.

okay I'll explain, Kraftwerk make ultra repetitive harsh electronic music, and I love that
and for that tune by GOTO80, its pretty much ear hurting glitchy electronica composed on a c64 entirely in machine code (as far as I know), so how he did it was great, and how it sounds is amazing

At the moment I'm listening to some obscure German metal band called Die Apokalyptischen Reiter. It's awesome, strange music, like a mix of thrash metal and folk music. The lead singer looks like Patchy the Pirate from Spongebob Squarepants. The guitarist's name is Lady Cat-Man, and the drummer is Sir G. They're rad.

My favourite song is
Let Down - Radiohead
A song off OK Computer. The lyrics seem to be about the drudgery of the system, the listlessness, weariness and I suppose despair that comes with making an uninspired, uninspiring life of daily routine, simply existing inside your own rut.
The first two verses and choruses set the tone. A musical interlude follows, which breaks down, then sets up momentum (as good a word as I have for it) for the final verse. Layered vocals give rise to a kind of crescendo into the last chorus, Thom Yorke's beautiful falsetto rising above the familiar melody of the chorus.
It's got memories attatched to it, so it means a lot to me.

Band The Beatles.
Solist Serj Tankian.
Songs
My favorite song is easily Eleanor Rigby from The Beatles. I love every letter and every note from it. This song makes me cry easily when i'm half drunk, no other song can get strong emotional responses from me, except for yesterday, perhaps.
Runner-ups to best song... TOO MANY, but here are some:
"Yesterday" ..."The Beatles". Sigh
.
"Empty Walls"- Serj Tankian. I'm not sure why but this song takes me to another plane of existence, the lyrics, the music, everything in it. This song makes my mind fly and create a different story every time I hear it.
"Girl Anachronism" - The dresden dolls: I'm not particulary fond of the band, but i like songs that are frenetic, chaotic, with schizofrenic and incoherent lirycs. Songs where you almost can feel the passion fo the artist. This song is all that.
"Shut me Up" - My mindless self indulgence: For the same reasons than Girl Anachronism.

Rock and Roll Never Felt So Good by GWAR.
I like it because it is exemplary of "good" shock rock. An upbeat, thrash-punk sound and a chorus that lifts the spirit, whilst talking about raping a thirteen year-old quadruple amputee, giving her syphilis, killing her, doing coke off her tits, and then leaving her on the side of the highway.
To be honest the initial reason for getting into GWAR was to one-up the douchebags at my school who go one about Psychobilly or Manson or some stupid band or genre because "OMG they're so FREAKY!!!". But I have come to actually respect their sound(s), the noise that we humans call music, and appreciate the Scumdogs f the Universe for what they really are: the most fucking immature performance to hit the stage and actually be funny.

Happiness is a warm gun by The Beatles.
There are several ways of viewing the lyrical content of the song. My favorite interpretation is that it's absurd to be joyful when you've just shot something, a "war is bad" kind of thing. The more likely interpretation is that the song is about heroine, especially considering the lyrics "I need a fix 'cause I'm going down", and the rest of the song (http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Happiness-is-a-Warm-Gun-lyrics-The-Beatles/98016EE12E812CFF48256BC2002124B0). What I like most about the song is it's rhythm. It shifts several times over the length of the song, it sounds great while going against conventions. Strawberry fields deserves an honorable mention for the same reason.
Comfort Eagle by Cake.
Cake's musical style finally put to use. Most of Cake's songs are about nothing, or they're singing about absurd things that no one else would ever bother to write about, like being an opera singer, or Igor Stravinsky. Comfort Eagle is about the music industry, and selling your soul. The song opens up with "We are building a religion", which is quite fitting when you look at how PR men sell their stuff. The rest of the song vilifies the industry, talking about stereotypical Agents, pendant keychains, and accepting callers who are interested in what's hot (http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Comfort-Eagle-lyrics-Cake/E3856E64F5EAEDD448256AA9001DBFD9).
John Wayne Gacy, Jr. by Sufjan Stevens
Sufjan Stevens is kind of a pretentious dick, but he deserves to be pretentious. Not only did he have the amazing idea of going to every state in the US and making a CD dedicated to their history, but his music sounds fucking great. He definitely has an ear for arranging a track. That aside, the track about John Wayne Gacy, Jr. is one of the most chilling songs you'll ever hear. John Wayne Gacy, Jr. is a serial killer from Illinois, for those of you who aren't in the know, and he killed and molested 33 boys in the 1970's. The song tells some of the facts of Gacy's life, how he was well respected by his peers, and how he was a clown (http://lyrics.lyr-x.com/5992/). The song ends with "And in my best behavior, I am really just like him, Look beneath the floorboards, For the secrets I have hid" either an ominous warning about trusting your neighbors, an observation about the secrets we all have, or Stevens telling us that he's a psychopath serial killer.
A Day in the Life of a Pool Shark by Idiot Pilot.
Idiot Pilot started out well enough, an experimental mix of 8-bit noises, soft lyrics, and a couple of well placed screams. They soon sold out to their corporate overlords and began to sound like everyone else. Before that happened though, their was this song. The 8-bit is outstanding, it's one of those things that makes the hairs on your neck stand on edge because it makes you feel so damned good. Maybe I'm crazy, I don't know. The song is somewhat about being a scam artist (http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/A-Day-In-The-Life-Of-A-Poolshark-lyrics-Idiot-Pilot/FE4BB5E66B73859648256FEC000761AD), with the line "When I want something, all I do is smile." and "Never did understand the lie, You can tell that someone is telling the truth by their eyes, it's just not true.". It could relate to love and stuff, but I like my interpretation.
